許冠文講笑話已經成師，明報報道，許冠文有一個理論：「講笑話要以 LCM (最小公因數) 作觀眾基數，讓最多人共鳴。」
不知是老師的錯還是記者學生的錯，LCM 正解 Least Common Multiple 最小公倍數，是因為數字無限，倍數亦可以擴展至無限，「最大公倍數」毫不現實，只有 LCM 才有數學上的意義。
許冠文應該是想說 GCD，最大公約數 Greatest Common Divisor，有包容並兼的意義；相反，所有整數都可以被 1 整除，說「最小公因數」亦毫無意義，因為一定是 1，許冠文難道把「阿媽係女人」當做笑話？
我讀書的年代，學校教的是 HCF，Highest Common Factor 最大公因數。N 年後在某一個場合，老師說國際上都已經叫 GCD 了，叫「約數」不叫「因數」；很有劉邦「約法三章」或者「中華民國臨時約法」的意味。可惜從歷史經驗上來講這個「約」字的運數並不好，「約法三章」和「臨時約法」都頃刻頹垣，香港開埠初期的「四環九約」也有「九個失約之地」的傳說 (董啟章，《地圖集》，一九九七年)。LCM 與 GCD 最大的分別是一個外向追尋，另一個內向計算；當內向思考的「合約」這個詞漸漸被「解約」取代，我們不如改用「合同」這個詞來合作共同追尋未來的 LCM，世界會進步得更好更美麗。
從跟阿媽的代溝一樣，上文與許冠文或者明報記者的誤會原來是隔了一個太平洋的文化差異：

許冠文沒說錯。 LCM 和英語中的 lowest common denominator 同義, 而後者口語中常解作「遷就觀眾的低水平」。
